While visiting friends in Montana, off in the distance amongst tall trees I could hear a loud haunting sound coming from an owl. His cry went on for hours and was like a high pitched howling. This had to bel a Snow Owl. I was so inspired by this magnificent bird that while my friend’s snow skied I spent the week painting this snow owl. These birds of prey have extra-large talons to pick up prey that have full winter coats. My owl is depicted to be fat and noble as I imagined the one I heard
The flamingo is the national bird of the Bahamas and with its gorgeous pink plumage is one of the world's most beautiful coastal birds. Many Floridians seem to share my admiration for these birds. I wanted to produce a work of bird art that would showcase their elegance and beauty in lieu of the fun and comedic yard fixtures of flamingos commonly seen all along the Florida Coast. Scratchboard art lends well to hand-etching every bird feather with intricate precision. I hope all will enjoy the mi
The Great Blue Heron is one of my favorite wading birds to watch. For years, my family took boating outings together on Lake Sinclair in Milledgeville, Georgia and we were able to observe the nesting habits of these coastal birds among the tops of tall trees. The Great Blue Heron is also one of the most commonly seen birds along lakes and coastal areas. The Great Blue Heron is regal in stature and are very comical when they are seen strutting as they raise their large feet up in the air. Thes
The Great Egret is also called the large or common Egret. These beautiful white wading birds flock in colonies and build nests up in trees near the water. I enjoy observing them while kayaking. They are patient hunters and are comical to observe as they strike a fish with their large orange beaks, and swallow them whole. In this work of bird art I wanted to capture this bird’s pose after he finished a meal feeling content.
The Green Wing Macaws are the most gentle of all macaws. There are twelve species of Macaws in the large Macaw category and they are second largest after the Hyacinth. Not only are they friendly, but they are beautiful with their deep red coloration and bright green on the top portion of their wings. In this work of bird art I hoped to capture the friendly expression and bright eyes of this magnificent bird.
This piece of bird art called "Little Blue" is actually a Little Green Backed Heron. I always consider it a rare treat to see one of these coastal birds. I have only observed them on lakes in Georgia and occasionally I have had the privilege of seeing these noble little wading birds while kayaking on Florida Springs. They are very iridescent looking birds in the sunlight with hues of brown, blues and greens on their shoulders and backs. These coastal birds seem are very skilled at catching fish
This owl was a special work of art because he was a commissioned piece. The client wanted the dramatic eyes of this bird of prey to be soulful as well as haunting. The owl is a nocturnal bird equipped with keen eyesight in the dark. While on the hunt they wait and watch patiently. These characteristics were depicted in the "Night Watchman".
The Blue-and-Gold Macaw is one of my favorite tropical bird species. This work of art is very special to me, as I own one of these beautiful birds. They are affectionate and childlike demanding attention, and is it like having a clown with feathers. This work, done in scratchboard, showcases the beautiful feathers and strong wings needed to fly hundreds of miles through tropical rain forests. These beautiful birds mate for life; thus the title "Partners".
The Roseate Spoonbill is one of my favorite coastal wading birds. They may be seen flying overhead, lighting up the sky with flashes of pink. Although they have comical looking faces with their large, flat spoon shaped bills, they are among the most beautiful birds due to their bright pink colored plumage. I wanted to concentrate more on their beauty in this commissioned work of bird art by choosing this side view of the elegant Roseate Spoonbill in flight.
The Scarlett Ibis is one of my favorite coastal wading birds. There is also a Brown-and-White Ibis, but the brilliant bright red plumage of these birds set them apart from the rest. Sunset is a good time to observe these spectacular birds as they dry their feathers against the evening sky. The “Scarlett Sunset” may also be sold as a triptych with my “Flamingo Lake” and “Roseate Spoonbill” pieces.
